Oct 5 The Black Forest (St Peter, St. Margen, Titisee)

The Black Forest is a forested mountain range in southwest Germany 100 miles long and 35 miles wide. The mountains are similar to the Appalachians in magnitude and appearance. The forests are interspersed with meadows, picturesque villages, guest houses, and farms. The area is also known for its cuckoo clocks which have been built in this region since the 1700s. It is also associated with the Brothers Grimm fairy tales.
Wednesday's temperatures ranged from 5 to 13 degees C (41 to 55 F) with a brisk breeze so we opted for driving trips to the villages of St. Peter, St. Margen and the Titesee east of Freiburg with some brief walks.

The kloster (monastery) in the village of St. Peter.

A guest house across the street from the monastery.
The tables would be crowded during the summer season.

A bakery in St. Peter where we stopped for coffee.

Views typical of the region.

A ski jump in Hinterzarten (near Titisee)
The jump has a special surface that is sprayed with
water for jumping in the summer. A jumper was
practicing and made a jump landing on the red
banner you see in the picture. A ski jumping
competition had been held the week before we arrived.

The small yellow cars in the middle of the picture
transport the ski jumpers to the top of the jump.

Some hardy tourists enjoying a ride through the village.

Views in Titisee (by the lake of the same name).
This is a popular summer resort comparable to
Estes Park. We walked the shops and took a
25 minute boat ride in an enclosed boat.

This little gal was sitting on the counter by
one of the shop cash registers (she belonged
to the lady clerk).

By the lake (Titisee). The summer season is over
but the boats are still available for use on warm days.

The enclosed boat allowed us to take a warm
25 minute ride around the lake (5 Euro pp).

Cuckoo clocks in a Titisee shop. Prices ranged
from 65 to 1,000+ Euros.

The shop keeper permitted pictures
of the entire wall but not individual clocks.

Outside of the vacation apt.
