July 10 - 12 The journey begins

July 10
Drove a rented Nissan Sentra to Denver and stayed overnight at the Hilton Garden Inn.

July 11 - 12
Iceland Air flew us from Denver (5:20 pm departure) to Zurich (1:15 pm arrival) in approximately 12 hours with a one hour stop in Reykjavik Iceland to change planes. I sang happy birthday to Barb on the first leg of the flight as we flew into the July 12 time zone.
We picked up a rental car and drove to Laufenburg to our Ferien Wohnung (vacation apartment). Our hosts are Adam and Eva (really). The apartment ($39 per night) has a fully equiped kitchen, bedroom, living room and bath. Clean and tidy with private entrance, ceramic tile and laminated plank flooring.
Laufenburg is an old historical city that spans the Rhine river (scroll to the end of the blog to see a picture) and lies about half way between Zurich and Basel. With this as a base for 3 nights, we will make day trips to Muttenz near Basel (where we lived in 1982-3) and the Black Forest.
We found this on our arrival. A small bottle of California Zinfandel "Herzlich Willkommen" is German for "Warm Welcome".
