Lucca Italy is an ancient walled city not far from Pisa. The fortress like walls are wide with a promenade on top where people can walk or ride bikes around the city. The full circuit is 4 km (2.5 miles). There is a large circular plaza, now surrounded by shops and apartments, that (according to a B&B hostess) was once the site of a Roman arena where gladiators fought. The city is a maze of narrow streets.
Part of the old city wall.
It has a wide promonade with trees on both sides on top.

Promonade to the right.
There are 4-peddle bicycles that can be rented to ride
on the city wall. We rented one with Wayne and Nomi,
Lincoln friends who we will travel with for one week.
It took us an hour to circle the city with some brief stops.

Outdoor cafes on the "gladiator" plaza.

(the apt we stayed in was outside of the old walled city)

I used my tablet GPS locator (blue dot)
on the city map to guide us
(which fortunately works without a wi-fi connection)
